How Invisalign® Works

Grove City Dentist Serving Columbus, Dublin, Hilliard, Ohio

For many patients, the advantages of Invisalign vs. traditional braces are literally clear. But just how does Invisalign work to bring your smile into alignment?

Your Invisalign Evaluation

The first step is an appointment with experienced Grove City dentist and Invisalign provider Dr. Raymond A. Sheridan to determine if you’re a candidate for Invisalign. Dr. Sheridan will conduct a thorough dental examination and evaluation of your bite condition to conclude whether Invisalign will be effective for you.

Although Invisalign is not for everyone, it has proven effective at correcting mild to moderate bite problems in teens and adults including:

  • Spaced teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overbite

If you and Dr. Sheridan decide to pursue Invisalign treatment for your bite condition, the next step is the creation of three-dimensional images of your teeth that will be used to map out the movements of your teeth and create your series of custom-fit aligners.

Your Invisalign Treatment

Using these digital images to design your unique treatment plan, Dr. Sheridan will then work with the Invisalign lab to create the aligners that will be used in succession to realign your teeth into the desired position. The aligners—which are custom made for your teeth and specific bite condition—fit snugly over your teeth and are composed of a smooth, comfortable, dental-grade plastic that won’t irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces.

You change your aligners for a new set approximately every two weeks, and the aligners will progressively shift your teeth through the dispersal of controlled force. Each set of Invisalign aligners is individually designed to move certain teeth as outlined in your individual treatment plan.

Aligners should be worn at least 20 hours a day, but they are removable for eating, drinking and cleaning. Dr. Sheridan will monitor your progress with check-ups approximately every six weeks through the Invisalign treatment process.

Although each case is different, most patients achieve results within 12 months when Invisalign aligners are used as directed.
